East Coast Summers.
New England is beautiful all year! Yet, there is something even more special about living by the water during a New England summer. There are so many coastal activities available and an endless amount of outdoor places to explore.
Since living in Connecticut, my absolute FAVORITE thing to do during the summers are visiting crab shacks! There is nothing better than sitting seaside in a literal shack-like building and enjoying a hot, buttery lobster roll! Lobster rolls are pretty expensive so this isn’t something that I enjoy every single day, but knowing our time here will eventually come to an end I try to consume as many of these as I can!! Some of my favorite crab shacks to eat at are: Captain Scott’s Lobster Dock in New London, Ford’s Lobsters in Noank, and Abbott’s Lobster in the Rough in Groton.

The thing that we probably do the most during the summers is visiting beaches (which is no surprise given that we live on the coastline and are a hop and a skip away from dozens of beautiful, sandy beaches). My kid could play for hours in the sand alone and I’m pretty much like a lizard- absorbing and basking in the rays of sunshine all day. One of our favorite things to do is go looking for “nature treasures” along the beach lines; anything from crab skeletons, shells, rocks, interesting wood/stick pieces, etc. Two local favorites for treasure hunting are Bluff Point and Avery Point in Groton.

There’s never really a bad time of the year for ice-cream, because face it, ice-cream is delicious!!! Summer is prime time to cool off with some good cold treats. We try to keep is local when we do actually go out for ice cream. (Dairy Queen is everywhere, nothing special about that). A place that we have enjoyed year round is Buttonwoods Farm in Griswold,CT. At this particular time we were there for their annual “Sunflowers for Wishes” where 100% of the proceeds benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Connecticut.

Last summer we were able to experience something on our bucket list that we haven’t had time to do: SAILING! It’s been years since we’ve had a summer where all three of us were together and last year that happened! We booked a private charter through Poet’s Lounge Sailing in Mystic, CT. Boarding at the mouth of the Mystic River, we passed by quintessential views of coastal New England homes in Noank as we set sail out towards Long Island Sound. After cruising around the open waters we made a small stop on Fisher’s Island before heading back home.

Our roots will forever be from here, America, born and raised. Yet, life requires us to move more frequently than we care to count. Whether living stateside or abroad, you can always find us traveling somewhere. We scout out places that you only think you can dream of one day seeing and we seek out those that aren’t found in guidebooks. We then bring them to life here in our travel memos, so hopefully, one day you too can visit them or at least be able to live vicariously through us. This blog isn’t just about crossing off places from a bucket list. It’s about absorbing and learning how other cultures grow and fit into the same world that we do. Life is short and the world is big. Enjoy and get out there!
