June turned out to have above normal summer temps but this year it continued to get worse. Italy went through most of this summer without any rain (at least here in the southern part) and temperatures continued to soar and held strong very early in the summer. It felt like August at the end of June- that uncomfortable and unenjoyable hot. So July hit and it was still sweltering, and unfortunately, that was the time our guests had arrived as well. But, our time here is limited, so we can’t stay cooped up inside all the time, hot or not. A little side note: Italy is known for not having/using their air conditioning so… we had to think of other ways to show our guests the best of Napoli, and also try to not melt. Typically we avoid the beaches during the summer here because that’s where everyone heads to on their break and it gets very overcrowded. We wanted to take them to the coast but avoid the craziness. So, we took them in style- by boat! I reached out to my friend Martina, who I have done cooking classes and other excursions with, and we took a ride on their rubber boat out around the Gulf of Naples! Cheers to summers in Italia! A day of trying to escape the oppressive heat boating on the open waters, lunch on my favorite island of Procida, and swimming with the fish in deep blue waters!
